On June 2, 2011 First Lady Michelle Obama and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack unveiled the federal government’s new food icon, MyPlate, to serve as a reminder to help consumers make healthier food choices. MyPlate is a new generation icon with the intent to prompt consumers to think about building a healthy plate at meal times and to seek more information to help them do that by going to www.ChooseMyPlate.gov. The MyPlate icon emphasizes the fruit, vegetable, grains, protein and dairy food groups. Participants will research the Choose the MyPlate web site that introduces this way of looking at nutrition and delve into the technology available on this web site.
You will apply your research in three (3) lesson plans appropriate to teach Choose MyPlate to your student population. A variety of research materials may be used, including the vast resources available on the internet. This course is suitable for any teacher, counselor, coach or staff member who teaches nutrition, healthy lifestyle to our students of any age. Flexibility of research and submissions is available to support those staff members whose student population is diverse, disabled or specialized in some fashion. This course is offered on-line and requires a computer with Browser, email, Internet accounts and some Internet experience. |
